WordPress for Beginners: Create a Blog Template to Keep on Track

By Jan Ashby

Hi everyone. Today I am providing some wordpress video training, and also some “WordPress Beginners” resources. Here is an example of a template (in case you aren’t aware):

Your introductory paragraph goes here. Basically it says if you want to be successful at “something“, here are the 4 things you must do, or must not do, to accomplish what your “something” is.

Item 1 (Main keyword)

Write some things in here about your topic. It shouldn’t be too much because the purpose of an article is to get people to your website. Just write 3 or 4 sentences

Item 2 (Related keyword)

Write some things in here about your topic. It shouldn’t be too much because the purpose of an article is to get people to your website. Just 3 or 4 sentences.

Item 3 (Related keyword)

Write some things in here about your topic. It shouldn’t be too much because the purpose of an article is to get people to your website. Just 3 or 4 sentences.

Item 4 (Related keyword)

Write some things in here about your topic. It shouldn’t be too much because the purpose of an article is to get people to your website. Just 3 or 4 sentences.

Here is your closing paragraph. Here you must simply say again what you said in your opening paragraph, and close. For instance: “if you pay attention to the details and make sure you do this, (what the 4 related keywords are about), you will find that you have more success at (whatever your main keyword is about).

Now I’d like to share a humorous anecdote with you – if you think you’re a RAW beginner, listen to THIS:

When I first began learning about blogging, I began with a free platform called Blinkweb. You may have heard of it – it’s one of Brad Callen’s web properties. Anyway, it is a “drag and drop” interface – should be easy but I was having tremendous difficulty getting it to LOOK right !! (Aargh).. Here is the listing:  http://homeschooling.blinkweb.com

If you take a look, you’ll notice that it says something PECULIAR up at the top : “New Page” is what it says, because (lol) I forgot to edit that section. So we all have to start somewhere – don’t be AFRAID to look silly, or make a little mistake.. 😆

Creating a Blog from Scratch: Some Great Tips for Beginners to WordPress

When it comes to creating a blog from scratch, the FIRST thing you should be told is that people SCAN – and you therefore will want to feature the following at your wordpress blog:

  1. Use BULLETS
  2. Use Lots of Images
  3. Use Video (after say 2nd Paragraph) Video Blogging - Blogging to Make Profits
  4. Use Numbered Lists 😉
  5. Use Humor or Anecdotes
  6. Use Charts, Graphs, and Tables
  7. Give Quick References (Link Out with Helpful Resources)Here’s some video training which will reinforce what I’ve just explained –

Creating a Blog from Scratch – How Essential is Video?

Just how IMPORTANT is video for your blog – well, according to the gentleman in the video, 80 percent of visitors will NOT read your content – they’d rather view video. They would prefer to have someone EXPLAIN things to them in the video !
Btw, the instructor in the video above is David Boozer and he is fairly knowledgeable. Both he and I (I’m Jan Ashby) espouse that you probably should BLOG about something you’re truly interested in – by choosing a Niche that you could still enjoy writing and blogging about for years to come .. well, you’ll probably KEEP at it !!

Some other important points for WordPress Beginners to BEAR in mind:

  • It’s important to use original material (No auto-blogging)
  • It’s a good idea to USE lots of facts (and To check Your Facts)
  • Link out to External Websites (with TRULY useful material)
  • Use Humor, or anecdotal stories about yourselfNow then, people, I have some wordpress training that’ll show you how to work with images and sliders – it’s kinda Fun, and really gets rolling along at about 23 minutes in.This instructional video tutorial will honestly HELP you get your Feet wet with building an appealing WordPress website (Trust me on this, I enjoyed doing it myself).Sliders are way cool, and fun !I think you’ll like the Thumbnails plugin that Tyler Moore shows (that’s 26 minutes into the video – CHECK it out!) – it’s the Post Thumbnail Editor plugin :
